Reason and Record allow you to use control voltage (virtual) generated by one synth to modulate sound of another synth. A common use of this is to have drums from the drum synth (Redrum or Dr. Rex) modulate a steady synth note from say a Subtractor or whatever.

I'm sure Live can do the same sort of thing. Is there an equivalent to CV? Is side chaining the same thing?

I'd love to leave Reason/Record behind, and use only the Live Suite. But I seem to be able to get sounds out of Reason faster.

Yup. Sidechaining the gate effect is exactly what you're after.

but there are TONS more interesting things you can do with CV in reason/record than simple sidechaining a compressor/gate.

I am in a similar position to the OP on this, as I like to do a lot of inter-modulation between all kinds of devices. Heck even having some kind of envelope follower with audio input and route-able midi outputs would rock.
