Akai APC40 - Opening the box

News - News

Thanks to Akai and StoreDJ, I've managed to get my grubby little hands on an APC40 before the official release date. I strolled down and collected it yesterday, went straight home, set the camera rolling and filmed my first experience with the unit.

Watch the video as I plug it in and jump right into it!

I am spending lots of time with it over the next few days, and I will show it off at the official Ableton Live 8 launch in Melbourne on Thursday night ( http://www.cosm.co.nz/launch ) ... so if you are in VIC, head on down.

So whats the verdict for the APC40 now Tom?
do you still use it? is it as tactile as everyone hoped?

a topic i was discussing the other day with a friend of mine who thought it would lead live acts down a single road and stop at a dead end, i think what he was trying to say was that if someone bought one of these that they would not be likely to build onto there liveset (maybe this is the point!) and everyone would be doing the same thing which could get a bit stale.

what do you think?

wow, look exactly like i had hoped for!

I HAVE to have one now, after having alle my worries answered in your video.
thnx for emptying my wallet Tom! .. just kidding

only thing missing is motorized faders for the volume, that would be sweet!

but as you said they have some resistance, and i hope that means that it is not so easy to accidently touch them, and making the volume reset to the positionm where they are, when swapping around the tracks.

Hoping to get one next week!

Whoops, I used anchor tags instead of bracketed URLs so the links above were stripped out! Here they are:

That looks like a solid unit and a good marketing concept: build a physical controller specifically for Ableton! The fact you could plug it in and get going that fast is a testimony that they did their homework. Hope this makes the music making more fun and/or productive for you!

Still whenever I see a fixed grid of buttons and knobs I find myself wanting more ability to design and rearrange the interface. So I've leaned toward just going virtual with touch screens, even if it's missing the satisfaction of being able to push and turn things to get tactile feedback. There are some interesting compromises to play with while we wait for full-scale nanotechnology (or immersive virtual reality)—ReacTable to name one.

(From dreams I've had experiences where I've been using things that are crazy flexible...as if you could "liquify" that Akai and pull knobs off of it or design buttons with new shapes. My Claymation Audio Pad Lesson is one account, but there have been others. You still have to have an idea for a song even then, though :P)

P.S. Today I came across Ronald Jenkees, don't know if you've heard his stuff before but I feel like he's another one of you guys who are channeling music from other dimensions.
