Welcome!

I’m Tom Cosm, and here are the key points about my musical project:

  • All of my music is free, it always has been and it always will be.
  • I produce and perform my music using Ableton
  • I travel around the world teaching audio production and performance, to both groups and individuals
  • Everything I know and learn is out on the table, I don’t hide any secrets
  • My music is heavily influenced by science and mathematics
  • This project is open, and if you like what it’s about, I invite you to get involved.
  • Most Importantly - I like to have fun. Lots of fun. When I stop having fun, I will find something else to do Tongue out

Why do I give all my music away for free?

I treat music as a form of communication that completely overpowers that of any other kind of human interaction, and I don’t want money or middle men getting in between the link that we create when you listen to my music, or have its access restricted to people who can either afford it, or have the technical ability to steal it. Everyone can download my music free at anytime directly from the source where it was created.

For a more indepth description, read this blog post.

My production and performance

All my music is written using Ableton Live. I mainly use freeware VST instruments and inbuilt Ableton effects. I don’t like to flood myself with too much choice when I am writing music, so I have a very limited amount of tools I use, however because of this, I know these tools inside out and can achieve the result I want pretty quickly.

My live performance is usually a 90 minute set, mixing all kinds of genres from minimal to electro, progressive to psychedelic. When I perform, I have all the elements of my music at my control, and can mix, layer and manipulate the music real time, making each set unique and driven by the vibe of the dance floor.

More information on how I perform live, and how I move from the studio to live, can be found in the video tutorial section.

My teaching

Over the last year, I have been traveling around various places teaching audio production, performance and how to move from the studio into performing true live laptop sets. When I am not teaching in person, I make free online tutorial videos and offer downloads of examples so people can come and get informed on techniques and tips which can be tricky to grasp without a bit of help.

My influences

Two things really drive me to make music.

  1. Science, physics and mathematics. I love stripping audio down to the bare bones, specifically how the simplicity of sound can affect someone’s emotions and feelings, and bring people together in a mass state of communion. This isn’t to say I am not inspired by other things such as nature and other artists, but I get the most pleasure and wonderment taking things that grab my attention, breaking them down into their roots and seeing what I can find.
  2. Being a silly bugger and writing the stupidest, silliest, dance floor playground stomping tunes I can for no other reason than making sure people are having a laugh.

Community

The backbone of this project are the people who contribute and help make it grow, people like you. I want you to participate as much as you can, whether it be offering thoughts/advice/critizm or even just spreading the idea out there amongst friends. My sole form of promotion is word of mouth, it creates a very strong and healthy link between the entire community. If you would like to get involved, the first step is to become a member, it’s easy and free.
